Youth
A disproportionate share of Fairhill’s residents are young people. 49% of residents are under age 19, and 3 in 4 are under age 30. And a a result of living in what the Philadelphia Inquirer termed “the poorest neighborhood in America’s poorest big city” the odds are stacked against our kids. Thus, our programming for youth is a huge priority, and one that is absolutely necessary given our context.
Wednesday youth group
The heart of our efforts is a Wednesday evening program that draws up to 40 neighborhood children together ages 4-18. Age-specific groups meet: learning the scriptures, praying together, and having fun.
Children’s Church
On Sundays, we have a well-organized Children’s Church program that is conducted during the sermon for kids under age 8. We use Lifeway’s Gospel Project curriculum. Multiple adult/youth teams alternate weeks in teaching a Bible Lesson, doing crafts, singing songs, and playing games. This is really vital because we have found that the lack of a welcoming place for young children to go often is the barrier that keeps local families away from attending worship and plugging into the church community. Likewise, the teaching teams’ meetings for preparation enable intergenerational mentoring to occur.
leadership training
Many Bible Heroes were young people who took God at his Word. We believe in exposing our children to leadership opportunities.
